Honest Questions

Why Does God Allow Suffering?

The Bible does not pretend suffering is small or simple. It teaches that pain entered a world broken by sin, that God is near to the hurting rather than distant from it, and that He is able to bring good even out of what was meant for evil. Above all, it points to a Savior who suffered for us.

If you are asking why God allows suffering, there is a good chance you are not asking in the abstract. Something has hurt you, or someone you love, and the pain is real. The Bible meets that honest question with honest answers, and with a hope that holds up even in the dark.

The short answer

Suffering exists because the world is broken by sin, not the way God first made it. God has not lost control of that broken world, and He has not walked away from it. He is close to the hurting, He works even hardship toward good for those who love Him, and He has promised a day when all suffering ends for good.

We live in a world broken by sin

The Bible traces pain, sickness, and death back to the fall, when sin entered the world and broke what God had made good. Much of what we suffer is the fallout of living in that broken world, not a sign that God is cruel or absent.

"For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now."Romans 8:22

God can bring good out of what is meant for harm

Scripture never says suffering is good in itself. It says God is able to weave even our worst days into a purpose we cannot yet see. Joseph, sold by his own brothers, later told them the truth about it.

"But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good..."Genesis 50:20
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."Romans 8:28

God is near to the brokenhearted

The Bible does not picture God as distant from our pain. It pictures Him drawing close to it, especially close to those who are crushed and grieving.

"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."Psalm 34:18

Jesus suffered too, and He understands

This is where the Christian answer is different from every other. God did not stay above our suffering. In Jesus Christ He entered it, was rejected, and died on a cross. He is not a stranger to pain, and He meets us in ours.

"...In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."John 16:33

A day is coming when suffering ends

For those who belong to Christ, the Bible promises that the present pain is not the end of the story. There is a day coming when God Himself sets everything right.

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain..."Revelation 21:4

A common misunderstanding

Many people assume that suffering always means God is angry with them or punishing them for something they did. But Jesus taught that hardship is not always a verdict on a person's sin. Sometimes God has a purpose in it that we cannot yet see.

"Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him."John 9:3
