If you have ever wondered how to be saved, or how a person can know they will go to Heaven, the Bible gives a clear and simple answer. You do not have to clean up your life first. You do not have to understand everything. You simply have to come to Jesus Christ as you are. Here is what God's Word says, step by step.
First, we all need to be saved
The starting place is honest but freeing: every one of us has sinned. None of us has lived up to God's standard, and no amount of good works can erase the wrong we have already done.
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."Romans 3:23
This is not meant to crush you. It simply means you are in the same place as every person who has ever been saved. Admitting our need is where grace begins.
Our sin has a price, but God offers a gift
Sin is serious. The Bible says it carries a penalty of death and separation from God. But in the same breath, God offers something better, freely.
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."Romans 6:23
A wage is something you earn. A gift is something you receive. Eternal life cannot be earned, only received.
Jesus already paid the price for you
This is the heart of the good news. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, took the punishment for your sin upon Himself. He died in your place, was buried, and rose again the third day.
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."Romans 5:8
He did not wait for you to be good first. He loved you and died for you while you were still far away. The empty tomb proves the payment was accepted and the victory is real.
How to receive Christ and be saved
Salvation comes by faith, by trusting Christ and calling on Him. It is not a matter of joining a church, being baptized, or trying harder. It is a matter of the heart turning to Jesus.
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."Romans 10:9
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."Romans 10:13
If you believe this and want to be saved, you can call on the Lord right now, wherever you are. The words do not save you, but they express the faith of a heart that does. You might pray something like this:
"Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and that my sin separates me from You. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sin, was buried, and rose again. Right now I trust in Jesus alone to save me. Lord Jesus, forgive me and be my Savior. Thank You for the gift of eternal life. Amen."
What happens next
If you trusted Christ, the Bible says you are now His child and have everlasting life. That is not your feeling talking, that is God's promise. The next steps are simple: tell God thank You, tell someone what you have done, and find a Bible-believing church where you can grow, be baptized, and learn to walk with the Lord. We would love to help you with that, and to answer any question you have.
