If you have trusted Jesus Christ but still battle doubt, you are not alone, and you are not without an answer. God does not want His children living in fear, wondering where they stand. He wrote down His promises so you could be certain.
God wants you to know, not just hope
The Apostle John said plainly why he wrote his letter: so that believers could be sure of where they stand with God.
"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life."1 John 5:13
Notice the word know. Assurance is not pride. It is taking God at His Word.
Assurance rests on God's promise, not your feelings
Feelings rise and fall. One day you feel close to God, the next you feel nothing. If your assurance is built on emotion, it will never be steady. But God's promise does not change with your mood.
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."John 5:24
If you have believed, Jesus says you have already passed from death unto life. That is settled by Him, not by how strong you feel today.
You are held by His hand, not your grip
Some fear they will lose their salvation the next time they fail. But the Bible says the believer is kept by the power of God, held in a grip that cannot be broken.
"And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand."John 10:28
"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life... shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."Romans 8:38-39
Your security is as strong as the One holding you. That is very good news on the days you feel weak.
If you are unsure you ever truly trusted Christ
Sometimes doubt comes because a person was never quite sure they had trusted Christ at all. If that is you, you can settle it today. You do not have to wonder forever. You can call on the Lord right now, trusting Jesus alone as your Savior, and rest on His promise to save all who come to Him. We would be glad to sit down, open the Bible with you, and help you find the peace God wants you to have.
