When someone you love is gone, the silence is deafening and the days feel impossible. Grief is not a sign of weak faith; even Jesus wept at a graveside. God does not rush you or shame your tears. He draws near to the brokenhearted, and He offers a comfort the world cannot give.
God is near to the grieving
You do not have to climb out of your sorrow to reach God. He comes down into it with you.
"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."Psalm 34:18
"Blessed be God... the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation..."2 Corinthians 1:3-4
A hope stronger than death
For those who trust Christ, death is not the end. The grave does not have the final word.
"I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live."John 11:25
"...that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him."1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
Walking through the grief
- Let yourself grieve. Tears are not faithlessness. Bring them honestly to God.
- Lean on God's Word daily. The Psalms especially give words when you have none.
- Do not isolate. Let God's people carry some of the weight with you.
- Hold to the hope of heaven. For the believer, this parting is not forever.
