Depression can make the days feel gray and the future feel closed. If that is where you are, please hear this gently: you matter to God, your life has worth, and the heaviness you feel does not have the final word. The Bible meets people in the pit and points them up.
God is near the brokenhearted
When you feel most alone, God is closest. He does not stand at a distance from your pain.
"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."Psalm 34:18
You are not the first to feel this
Even great people of faith wrestled with despair. The psalmist spoke honestly to his own downcast soul, and then preached hope back to himself.
"Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God."Psalm 42:11
Notice he did not pretend to feel fine. He told the truth about his heart and still anchored himself in God. You can do the same.
God lifts people out of the pit
The Bible is full of people God rescued from the lowest places. He is able to set your feet on solid ground again.
"He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings."Psalm 40:2
Gentle steps toward the light
- Tell God the truth. Pour out your heart honestly, as the psalmists did.
- Do not isolate. Let people in. A caring church family can carry you when you cannot carry yourself.
- Seek wise help. There is no shame in talking to your pastor and, where needed, a trusted doctor.
- Hold to one promise at a time. When everything feels dark, cling to a single verse of hope.
The deepest hope
Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). The truest, lasting hope is found in knowing Him. If you are in a dark place today, please do not stay there alone. Reach out to us. We will listen, we will pray, and we will walk with you toward the light.
