What the Bible Says About Divorce and Remarriage

God designed marriage to be one man and one woman for life, and He says plainly that He hates divorce. We hold that high view without apology. We also know many people carry deep wounds and regret from a broken marriage, and to them the gospel offers real forgiveness, healing, and a way forward.

Marriage is not a human invention to be redefined or discarded. God made it, He defined it, and He meant it to last a lifetime. We hold firmly to what Scripture teaches, and we also hold out the grace of Christ to everyone whose marriage has been broken.

God's design is one flesh for life

From the beginning marriage was meant to be permanent, a covenant that man is not to break.

"Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."Matthew 19:6
"For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away..."Malachi 2:16

Why we take divorce so seriously

Because God hates divorce, we will never treat it lightly or encourage it. We urge couples to fight for their marriage, to forgive, and to seek God's help before ever considering separation. So much pain is spared when two people refuse to quit.

What about those already divorced?

If you have been through a divorce, hear this clearly: you are not beyond God's love or His church. The same Savior who upholds marriage also forgives sin and binds up the broken.

"He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds."Psalm 147:3
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."1 John 1:9

Where to go from here

  • If you are married, guard it, forgive quickly, and get help early instead of letting bitterness grow.
  • If your marriage is failing, do not give up quietly. Reach out before you make a decision you cannot undo.
  • If you are already divorced, bring your hurt and regret to Christ, who forgives fully and gives a new beginning.
