What Does the Bible Say About Swearing and Foul Language?

The Bible commands that no corrupt communication proceed out of our mouths, and it warns that our words flow from the heart. Cursing, profanity, and foul language dishonor God and harm others. He calls us instead to wholesome, gracious speech that builds up and blesses.

The words we speak reveal more than we realize. The Bible teaches that the mouth speaks out of the abundance of the heart, and it calls God's people to a manner of speech that is clean, gracious, and God-honoring, not coarse or profane.

The short answer

Scripture commands that no corrupt communication come out of our mouths, and it warns that idle and coarse words will be accounted for. Cursing, profanity, and foul language fall short of the wholesome speech God calls for. Our words reveal our hearts, so clean speech begins with a heart made new by Christ.

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth

Paul gives a direct command about the kind of words that should and should not leave our lips.

"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers."Ephesians 4:29

Notice the aim of our speech: to edify, to build others up, to minister grace. Foul and corrupt talk does the opposite. It tears down and pollutes rather than blessing.

Put away filthy communication

Coarse and filthy language is named among the things a believer is to lay aside.

"But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth."Colossians 3:8

Filthy communication is grouped with anger and malice as part of the old life we leave behind in Christ. Our speech is meant to change when our hearts change.

Your words come from your heart

Jesus taught that our speech is a mirror of what fills our hearts.

"O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh."Matthew 12:34

This means foul language is not merely a bad habit of the tongue. It signals what is stored up inside. Cleaning up our speech starts with a heart transformed by God.

We give account for our words

Jesus solemnly warned that even careless words are noticed by God.

"But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment."Matthew 12:36

God takes our words seriously. Let our speech be gracious and seasoned, ready to bless rather than to wound.

"Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man."Colossians 4:6

A common misunderstanding

Some think foul language is a minor thing, just words, or that cursing only counts if it uses God's name. But Scripture treats all corrupt speech as significant, because words flow from the heart and reveal it. Ephesians 4:29 forbids any corrupt communication, not only blasphemy. This is not about being stiff or unable to speak plainly. It is about speech that ministers grace and honors God. A clean tongue is one fruit of a changed heart.
