If your temper has cost you peace at home and respect from the people you love, you already know it is a problem. The Bible takes anger seriously, and it offers a clear path out, not through gritted teeth, but through a heart changed by God.
God draws a line
Scripture does not condemn every feeling of anger, but it warns sharply against the anger that lingers, lashes out, and gives the devil a foothold.
"Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil."Ephesians 4:26-27
"...for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God."James 1:20
Anger is something to put off
The Bible treats sinful anger as a garment to be taken off and replaced with something better. This is the heart of real change: not just stopping the outburst, but putting on kindness in its place.
"Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."Ephesians 4:31-32
Practical wisdom from Scripture
- Be slow. "Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath" (James 1:19). A pause is often the whole battle.
- Answer softly. "A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger" (Proverbs 15:1).
- Hold your tongue. "A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards" (Proverbs 29:11).
- Forgive. Much anger is rooted in unforgiveness. Releasing it to God releases you.
The real cure is a changed heart
Anger is a fruit, and the root is the heart. Trying to manage it without God is like trimming weeds and leaving the roots. When you walk with Christ and let His Spirit work in you, the very thing that ruled you begins to lose its grip. If anger has been hurting you and those you love, reach out. We would be glad to pray with you and point you to the One who can give you a new heart.
