We live in a world where bending the truth is common and even expected. The Bible cuts through all of that. Because God Himself is truth and cannot lie, He calls His people to be truthful too, in matters large and small.
The short answer
Lying is sin. Scripture says God hates a lying tongue and numbers it among the things He detests. Believers are commanded to put away lying and speak truth to one another. This includes white lies and half-truths, because they still deceive, and our God is a God of truth.
God hates a lying tongue
Among a short list of things God calls an abomination, lying appears twice.
"These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood."Proverbs 6:16-17
To lie is not a small thing to God. He places it alongside pride and violence as something He truly hates. That should shape how seriously we treat our own words.
Put away lying and speak truth
The New Testament commands believers to break with falsehood as part of their new life in Christ.
"Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another."Ephesians 4:25
Truthfulness builds trust in the body of Christ and in every relationship. Deceit tears it apart. We are to be people whose word can be relied upon.
Lying lips are an abomination
God contrasts the delight He takes in honesty with His hatred of deceit.
"Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight."Proverbs 12:22
God is pleased when we deal truthfully, even when the truth is hard or costly. He delights in a people who can be believed.
God cannot lie, and we bear His likeness
Truthfulness is rooted in the very character of God, who cannot lie.
"In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began."Titus 1:2
Because our salvation rests on the fact that God keeps His word and cannot deceive, His children are called to reflect that same truthfulness, speaking the truth in love.
"But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ."Ephesians 4:15
A common misunderstanding
Many believe small white lies are harmless, told to spare feelings or avoid trouble. But Scripture never divides lies into acceptable and unacceptable sizes. A lie is a lie, and Proverbs 12:22 calls lying lips an abomination without exception. This does not mean we must be harsh or blurt out every thought. The command is to speak truth in love, choosing our words kindly and wisely, but always honestly. Truth and love belong together, not truth against love.
