Cheating on a test, at work, in business, or in a game is really a form of lying and stealing. The Bible does not use the modern word, but its picture of the dishonest merchant with false scales speaks directly to every kind of cheating we face today.
The short answer
Cheating is sin because it is dishonesty and theft. Scripture repeatedly condemns false weights and balances, its picture of gaining unfairly, calling them an abomination to God. He commands integrity and honest dealing, and He calls us to work diligently and honestly as unto Him, not to grab what we did not earn.
A false balance is an abomination
God's law against cheating comes through the image of the dishonest scale.
"A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight."Proverbs 11:1
To cheat is to rig the scale, to take an advantage you did not earn and to rob another of what is fair. God delights in the person who deals justly and honestly with everyone.
Provide things honest in the sight of all
The New Testament calls believers to a life that is honest and above board before everyone.
"Provide things honest in the sight of all men."Romans 12:17
Cheating always requires hiding something. Honesty, by contrast, has nothing to conceal. A Christian's dealings should hold up to full daylight.
Work heartily, as unto the Lord
Cheating is often a shortcut around honest effort. Scripture calls us to work diligently as if serving Christ Himself.
"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men."Colossians 3:23
When you study, labor, or compete knowing the Lord sees, cheating loses its appeal. You are working for His approval, not merely to beat the system or impress people.
God sees in secret
Cheaters count on not being caught. But nothing is hidden from God.
"For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known."Luke 12:2
What we do in secret is fully seen by God, and He is the one whose judgment matters most. Honesty is wisest even when no human being would ever know.
"The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them."Proverbs 11:3
A common misunderstanding
Some tell themselves that cheating is harmless when no one seems to get hurt, or that everyone does it, so it must be fine. Scripture answers both. God sees what people miss, and He calls the dishonest balance an abomination whether or not anyone is watching. And the common practice of the crowd never sets God's standard. Cheating also harms the cheater, dulling the conscience and building a habit of deceit that spreads into every area of life.
