What Does the Bible Say About Cremation?

The Bible does not command burial or forbid cremation, and it never calls cremation a sin. Burial was the common practice in Scripture, but the power of the resurrection does not depend on how the body returns to dust. God is able to raise every believer, whatever became of the body.

When a loved one dies, families often ask whether cremation is allowed for a Christian, or whether it is a sin. It is a tender and honest question. The Bible does not forbid cremation, and it does not call it a sin. It does speak of burial as a common practice, and it gives great hope about the resurrection of the body.

The short answer

Scripture nowhere commands burial or condemns cremation. Burial was the usual custom in Bible times, but a believer's hope does not rest on how the body is handled. It rests on the God who raises the dead.

Burial in the Bible

Throughout Scripture, God's people commonly buried their dead. Abraham purchased a field to bury Sarah, and even the Lord Jesus was laid in a tomb. Burial was a way of honoring the body and expressing hope in a future resurrection.

"And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan."Genesis 23:19

This custom was meaningful, but it was custom, not command. Scripture never says a soul is lost or dishonored because a body was not buried.

The body returns to dust

The Bible teaches that after death the body returns to the earth from which it came. This was true of burial, and it is no less true of any other means. The end is the same.

"...for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."Genesis 3:19
"Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it."Ecclesiastes 12:7

The resurrection is God's power, not ours

The heart of Christian hope is that God raises the dead. Consider that many believers through history have been lost at sea, burned, or otherwise had no grave at all. None of that is beyond the reach of God's power.

"For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality."1 Corinthians 15:53

The same God who made the body from dust can raise it again in glory. Cremation does not weaken that promise in the slightest.

A common misunderstanding

Some fear that a cremated body cannot be raised, or that choosing cremation shows a lack of faith. But the resurrection has never depended on the condition of the body. It depends on the risen Christ. What matters is not how the body returns to dust, but whether the person trusted in the Savior who conquered death.

"I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:"John 11:25

Where a believer is, in a grave or scattered as ashes, the Lord knows His own and will raise them.
