Few questions trouble tender hearts more than the fear of having committed an unforgivable sin. If that fear has gripped you, take a breath. The Bible speaks about this, and the honest answer brings far more comfort than dread to the person who longs for God.
The short answer
The unforgivable sin is the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost that Jesus described. It is a settled, final rejection of the Spirit's testimony about Christ. If you desire forgiveness and want to come to Jesus, you have not committed it, because that desire is itself the Spirit at work in you.
What Jesus actually said
The Lord Jesus spoke of one sin that would not be forgiven. It is important to read His words carefully rather than fear a phrase out of context.
"Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men."Matthew 12:31
Notice the sweeping mercy first. All manner of sin can be forgiven. Jesus was speaking to hardened religious leaders who saw His works, knew the Spirit was behind them, and deliberately called that power the work of the devil. It was a knowing, defiant rejection.
The gospel is a promise of full forgiveness
Scripture is full of promises that God forgives those who come to Him. The offer is wide open, and no sincere seeker is turned away.
"...him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out."John 6:37
"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow..."Isaiah 1:18
Why worried hearts can rest
The very fact that a person fears this sin and wants to be right with God is powerful evidence that the Spirit is still striving with them. A hardened, unforgivable heart does not weep, worry, or long for mercy. It does not care at all.
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."2 Timothy 1:7
The Spirit does not drive a seeking soul into despair. He draws it toward Christ, where forgiveness is freely given.
A common misunderstanding
Many people fear they committed the unforgivable sin by a bad thought, a curse word, or a season of doubt. But those things, however wrong, are not the blasphemy Jesus described. That sin is a deliberate, final refusal of the Spirit's witness to Christ by someone with no desire to repent. If your heart still longs for God, the door is open.
"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."Psalm 34:18
A broken and contrite heart is exactly the heart God receives, not the heart He casts away.
