Hope for Hard Days

What Does the Bible Say About Social Media?

The Bible never mentions social media, but its wisdom fits it perfectly. It calls us to guard our hearts, redeem our time, resist envy and comparison, and let our words be true and kind. Used with wisdom social media can bless; used carelessly it can steal our peace and our witness.

Social media did not exist when the Bible was written, yet Scripture speaks directly to the heart issues behind it: how we guard our hearts, spend our time, handle comparison, and use our words. Those timeless principles turn a modern question into a clear one.

The short answer

The Bible does not name social media, but it gives everything we need to use it wisely. Guard your heart against what you take in, redeem your time rather than wasting it, resist the envy and comparison that scrolling breeds, and let your words online be truthful and kind. Social media is a tool that reveals and shapes the heart.

Guard your heart

What we take in through our screens shapes us. Scripture urges careful watch over the heart.

"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."Proverbs 4:23

A steady diet of certain content, whether angry, impure, or discouraging, seeps into the heart. We are responsible for guarding what we let in, choosing what feeds our souls rather than poisons them.

Redeem the time

Hours can vanish into endless scrolling. The Bible calls us to use our time with purpose.

"See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil."Ephesians 5:15-16

Our days are a gift from God and are limited. Ask whether your time online is being redeemed for good or quietly stolen from things that matter far more.

Resist comparison and envy

Social media constantly displays the highlights of others' lives, feeding comparison and discontent. Scripture calls us to contentment instead.

"But godliness with contentment is great gain."1 Timothy 6:6

Envy eats away at joy and gratitude. God warns against coveting what belongs to others, and He calls us to rejoice in what He has given us rather than resenting what He has given someone else.

"A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones."Proverbs 14:30

Speak truth and kindness online

The words we type are still words we answer for. Scripture calls for speech that ministers grace.

"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers."Ephesians 4:29

Before you post, comment, or share, ask whether it is true and whether it builds up. Kindness and truthfulness should mark a Christian's words in every setting, screen included.

"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."Ephesians 4:32

A common misunderstanding

Some assume social media is simply evil and must be avoided entirely, while others treat it as harmless entertainment with no spiritual weight. The truth sits between. Social media is a tool, and like any tool it can be used for good or for harm. It can encourage, connect, and even share the gospel, or it can feed envy, waste time, and spread strife. The issue is the heart behind the use. Guard your heart, watch your time, and let your words honor God, and the tool can serve you rather than master you.
