What Does the Bible Say About Greed?

The Bible warns strongly against greed and covetousness. It teaches that the love of money is the root of all evil, that life does not consist of possessions, and that lasting treasure is stored in heaven. God calls us to contentment, generosity, and trust in Him rather than in wealth.

Greed is the restless craving for more, more money, more things, more than we need and more than others have. The Bible treats it as a serious matter of the heart, an idol that competes with God for our trust and worship.

The short answer

The Bible calls greed and covetousness sin. Jesus warned that life is not measured by possessions, and Paul wrote that the love of money is the root of all evil. God calls us instead to contentment, generosity, and treasure laid up in heaven, trusting Him rather than our bank accounts.

The love of money is a root of evil

Paul's warning to Timothy is one of the clearest statements in Scripture on this subject.

"For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."1 Timothy 6:10

Notice it is not money itself but the love of it that ensnares. Greed pierces the greedy with sorrows and can even pull a person away from the faith. The craving never satisfies.

Life is not your possessions

Jesus spoke plainly against measuring life by what we own.

"And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth."Luke 12:15

He then told of a rich man who built bigger barns and died that same night, calling him a fool. Storing up for self while ignoring God is folly, no matter how full the barns.

Lay up treasure in heaven

Jesus pointed our hearts to a better and lasting investment.

"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven."Matthew 6:19-20

He added a piercing truth about where our hearts follow.

"For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."Matthew 6:21

Contentment is great gain

The cure for greed is a heart content in God rather than in stuff.

"But godliness with contentment is great gain."1 Timothy 6:6

God promises to supply what we need and to never leave us, which frees us from the anxious grasping that greed produces.

"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."Hebrews 13:5

A common misunderstanding

Many think greed is only a problem for the rich, or that having money is itself sinful. Neither is true. Greed is a matter of the heart, and a poor person can covet as fiercely as a wealthy one. Scripture does not condemn owning things or working hard. It condemns loving money, trusting in it, and hoarding it while others go without. The wealthy in Scripture were told to be rich in good works and ready to give, not to feel ashamed of what God provided.
