Money touches nearly every part of life, so it is no surprise that people search for what the Bible says about it. The good news is that Scripture is neither ashamed of money nor obsessed with it. It gives clear, practical wisdom that frees us from both greed and worry.
The short answer
Money is a tool, not a master. The Bible does not condemn earning, saving, or owning things. It condemns letting money rule your heart. The danger is not the dollar but the love of it, and the cure is contentment in God and generosity toward others.
It is the love of money, not money, that is the problem
One of the most misquoted verses in the Bible is often shortened to "money is the root of all evil." That is not what it says. The problem is the love of money.
"For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."1 Timothy 6:10
You cannot serve both God and money
Jesus taught that money makes a terrible god. It will always compete for the place in your heart that belongs to the Lord, and you have to choose which one you will serve.
"No man can serve two masters... Ye cannot serve God and mammon."Matthew 6:24
Work, give, and be content
The Bible honors honest work and calls us to give generously and cheerfully, putting God first with what we earn.
"Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase."Proverbs 3:9
"...God loveth a cheerful giver."2 Corinthians 9:7
It also calls us to contentment, reminding us that our security is in the Lord, not in a bank balance.
"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."Hebrews 13:5
A warning about debt
Scripture does not forbid all borrowing, but it is honest about what debt does to a person, and it urges wisdom.
"The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender."Proverbs 22:7
Seek first the kingdom
The heart of the Bible's teaching on money is a promise: when God is truly first, the worry over provision begins to lose its grip.
"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."Matthew 6:33
A common misunderstanding
Some teach that strong faith will always make a person wealthy, and that being poor means something is wrong with your walk with God. The Bible does not promise riches to the faithful. It promises something better, contentment and the presence of God, which it calls great gain.
"But godliness with contentment is great gain."1 Timothy 6:6
