Gambling sells a dream and collects a debt. What begins as harmless fun can quietly become a snare that drains a bank account, a marriage, and a soul. The Bible does not treat the love of money lightly, and neither should we. But it also shows the way to real freedom.
The root the Bible warns about
Gambling is driven by covetousness, the craving for more, and by the love of money that Scripture calls a root of evil.
"But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare... For the love of money is the root of all evil..."1 Timothy 6:9-10
"...Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth."Luke 12:15
The get-rich-quick trap
The Bible specifically warns against chasing sudden wealth, because it tends to vanish and to ruin the one chasing it.
"Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase."Proverbs 13:11
"He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him."Proverbs 28:22
God's better way: contentment
The antidote to covetousness is contentment, learning to rest in what God has given and in His promise never to forsake you.
"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."Hebrews 13:5
Steps to break free
- Repent and call it sin. Turn from the love of money and trust Christ to change your heart.
- Cut off the access. Block the apps and sites, avoid the casinos, and remove the temptation.
- Get honest help. Bring a trusted believer or pastor into the picture and address any debt directly.
- Learn to give and to work. Generosity and honest labor heal a covetous heart.
