Debt is a heavy weight in many homes today. The Bible does not forbid all borrowing outright, but it speaks soberly about the bondage debt brings and calls God's people to wisdom, honesty, and contentment with what the Lord provides.
The short answer
Scripture warns that the borrower becomes servant to the lender, so debt is treated as a form of bondage to be avoided where possible. Borrowing is not called sin outright, but wisdom, repaying what you owe, and refusing to let covetousness drive you into debt are all commanded. God calls us to trust Him rather than lean on loans.
The borrower is servant to the lender
The plainest verse on debt describes the relationship it creates.
"The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender."Proverbs 22:7
Debt binds your future income to someone else. It limits your freedom to give, to serve, and to follow God's leading. That is why Scripture treats it as something to escape, not something to embrace lightly.
Owe no man anything but love
Paul urges believers to keep their accounts clear and their obligations paid.
"Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law."Romans 13:8
The one debt we should always carry is love. Financial obligations should be paid promptly and not left to burden others or damage our testimony.
Repay what you owe; do not withhold
Failing to repay is treated as a mark of the wicked, while generosity marks the righteous.
"The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth."Psalm 37:21
If you have borrowed, God expects you to make it right. Do not withhold payment when it is in your power to give it.
"Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it."Proverbs 3:27
Guard against covetousness and count the cost
Much debt is driven by wanting more than we can afford. Scripture calls us to contentment and careful planning.
"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have."Hebrews 13:5
Jesus praised counting the cost before committing, a principle that applies directly to borrowing.
"For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?"Luke 14:28
A common misunderstanding
Some believe the Bible forbids all borrowing and that any loan or mortgage is sin. Scripture is more careful than that. It regulated lending and even allowed borrowing among God's people, so borrowing itself is not condemned. The warning is about the bondage of debt, the danger of covetous overspending, and the sin of not repaying. Wise, planned, and repaid borrowing for genuine need is different from reckless debt driven by wanting what we cannot afford.
