What Does the Bible Say About Smoking and Vaping?

The Bible never mentions cigarettes or vapes, but it does teach that your body belongs to God and is the temple of the Holy Ghost. Smoking and vaping harm that body and can enslave you to a habit, so the wise, loving choice is to glorify God with your body instead.

The Bible was written long before tobacco or vaping existed, so you will not find the words in it. What you will find are clear principles about your body, your habits, and who you belong to. Those principles answer the question plainly.

The short answer

Smoking and vaping are not named in Scripture, but they violate its principles. Your body is God's temple, not your own, and He asks you to keep it and control your desires rather than be mastered by them. A habit that harms your health and holds you captive does not honor the Lord who bought you.

Your body belongs to God

The most direct passage speaks of the believer's body as a dwelling place for God's Spirit. That changes how we treat it.

"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Because you were bought by the blood of Christ, your body is not merely yours to spend however you please. Filling your lungs with smoke or your bloodstream with nicotine is a poor way to steward what God calls His own.

Do not be brought under bondage

Smoking and vaping are addictive by design. The Bible warns against letting anything master us.

"All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any."1 Corinthians 6:12

A Christian is called to liberty, not to slavery. When a habit controls your schedule, your money, and your cravings, it has taken a place that belongs to Christ alone. Sober, self-controlled living is the fruit of the Spirit, not addiction.

Whatsoever ye do, do to the glory of God

Scripture gives us a simple test for everyday choices that are not spelled out verse by verse.

"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God."1 Corinthians 10:31

Ask honestly whether lighting up or vaping glorifies God. Consider also love for others. Secondhand smoke harms family members, and a visible habit can weaken your testimony before the lost and the young.

"Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth."1 Corinthians 10:24

Care for the body God gave you

God made your body and expects us to care for what He entrusts to us. Even bodily care has value, and our days belong to Him.

"For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."1 Timothy 4:8

Deliberately damaging your lungs and heart is not stewardship. If you already smoke or vape, this is not condemnation but an invitation to freedom. God gives grace and strength to those who ask Him.

A common misunderstanding

Some say, "It is my body and my choice, so it hurts no one but me." Scripture answers that your body is not your own if you are saved. It was purchased at the cross and is now the temple of God's Spirit. Others feel too hooked to ever quit. But the same Lord who saves also delivers, and no chain is stronger than His grace.

"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."Philippians 4:13
