Alcohol has ruined more homes, wrecked more marriages, and buried more men than most people care to count. The Bible does not treat it as a harmless pleasure. It warns about it again and again, and it commands the believer to be sober and clear-headed. We take a firm position: the wise and Christlike choice is to abstain.
What the Bible plainly says
Scripture repeatedly warns against wine and strong drink and the deception they bring.
"Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise."Proverbs 20:1
"Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup... At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder."Proverbs 23:31-32
God commands sobriety
The New Testament does not tell us to drink in moderation. It tells us to be filled with the Spirit instead.
"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit."Ephesians 5:18
"Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink..."Habakkuk 2:15
Why we teach total abstinence
Drunkenness is plainly condemned, and the safest way to never be drunk is to never drink. Beyond your own safety, your liberty must never become a stumblingblock to a weaker brother.
"It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak."Romans 14:21
If drink already has hold of you
- Call it what God calls it. Repent of drunkenness as sin and trust Christ to free you.
- Pour it out. Remove it from your home so the temptation is gone.
- Get help, not shame. Bring a pastor or trusted believer alongside you.
- Be filled with something better. Replace the bottle with the Word, prayer, and the Spirit's work.
