What Does the Bible Say About Racism?

The Bible teaches that every person is made in the image of God and that all nations come from one blood. Racism, treating anyone as less because of skin or ancestry, is sin. The gospel tears down that wall and unites people from every background into one family in Christ.

Racism is a deep wound in our world, and the Bible speaks to it plainly. Scripture does not treat human beings as belonging to different classes of worth. It teaches that we all share one Maker, one origin, and one need for the same Saviour. That truth leaves no room for racial pride or prejudice.

The short answer

The Bible teaches that all people are made in the image of God and descend from one man, so we are literally one human family. Racism, judging or mistreating others because of skin color or ancestry, is sin against God and against people He loves. The gospel breaks down that dividing wall and makes us one in Christ.

All made in God's image, of one blood

Every human being carries the image of God. That is the foundation of human dignity, and it applies to everyone without exception.

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."Genesis 1:27

The Bible also tells us that every nation on earth came from one common ancestry. There is only one race, the human race.

"And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation."Acts 17:26

Racism is sin

Because all people bear God's image, showing partiality or contempt based on race is sin. The Bible condemns favoritism and judging by outward appearance.

"But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors."James 2:9

God Himself does not show partiality, and He calls His people to reflect that same fairness.

"Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons."Acts 10:34

The gospel unites

The cross does more than save individuals. It reconciles people who were once divided, making them one. In Christ, old hostilities are meant to die.

"For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us."Ephesians 2:14

Heaven itself shows the goal, a redeemed people gathered from every background, worshiping together.

"After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb."Revelation 7:9

A common misunderstanding

Some assume the Bible was used to justify racism, so it must support it. The opposite is true. When people twisted Scripture to defend prejudice, they were disobeying it, not following it. The Bible never divides humanity into higher and lower races. It declares one origin, one image, one Saviour, and one redeemed family. The problem was never the Bible. The problem was sinful hearts ignoring what it plainly says. The real cure for racism is not merely tolerance but the transforming grace of the gospel, which teaches us to love as God loves.
