Is it right for a Christian to love their country? The Bible gives a balanced answer. Gratitude and care for the land God has placed us in are good and natural. Yet Scripture also guards us from a danger, letting love of country become a kind of worship that competes with our devotion to God, whose kingdom outlasts every nation.
The short answer
The Bible permits and even encourages a proper love for one's country, gratitude, care for its good, and honor toward it. But it forbids making a nation an idol or placing it above God. Our first and highest allegiance is to the Lord, and our true, lasting citizenship is in heaven.
It is good to love your homeland
God placed each of us in a particular time and place, and He calls us to seek the good of the land where we live.
"And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace."Jeremiah 29:7
Even the apostle Paul carried a deep, aching love for his own nation and people.
"I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart."Romans 9:1-2
God alone deserves worship
Love of country becomes dangerous when it crosses into worship. God will share His glory with no nation and no thing.
"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."Exodus 20:3
The Bible reminds us that all nations, however great they seem, are small before God.
"Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance."Isaiah 40:15
Heaven is our true home
The Christian is, in a sense, a pilgrim on earth. Our deepest belonging is not to any country here but to the kingdom of God.
"For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ."Philippians 3:20
The faithful of old lived with their eyes on a better country, and so do we.
"But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city."Hebrews 11:16
A common misunderstanding
Some think love of country and love of God must always agree, so whatever the nation wants must be right. Others think any patriotism is wrong. The Bible avoids both errors. It is good to be grateful for and to serve the place God set us, but no nation is beyond God's judgment or above His law. When love of country turns into blind loyalty or replaces our worship of God, it has become an idol. Rightly ordered, patriotism is a form of gratitude to God, held loosely, under the greater love we owe to Him and His eternal kingdom.
