The Bible calls God's people to care for the poor with open hands and open hearts. Generosity toward the needy is close to the heart of God, who counts kindness to the poor as kindness shown to Him. He promises to bless those who give.
The short answer
The Bible teaches that caring for the poor is close to the heart of God. He commands generosity, justice, and mercy toward the needy, and He treats kindness to the poor as kindness lent to Himself. Helping the poor is not optional for God's people.
God cares deeply for the poor
From beginning to end, Scripture reveals a God who sees and defends the poor. He does not favor the rich over the needy. Instead He takes the side of the vulnerable and calls His people to reflect that same compassion.
"He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor."Proverbs 14:31
To show mercy to the poor is to honor God Himself. To ignore or oppress them is to insult their Maker. How we treat the least among us reveals what we truly believe about God.
Giving to the poor is lending to the Lord
The Bible describes generosity to the needy in a striking way. When you give to the poor, God treats it as a loan made to Him, and He promises to repay what you have given.
"He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again."Proverbs 19:17
You never lose by helping the poor. The God who owns everything takes note of every act of mercy and stands as debtor to the generous. His repayment is always more than we gave.
Open your hand freely
God does not want a stingy, reluctant kind of giving. He calls His people to open their hands wide to those in need, without grumbling, trusting Him to provide for their own needs as they give.
"Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land."Deuteronomy 15:11
Generosity is a posture of the heart before it is an act of the hand. When we hold our resources loosely and give freely, we mirror the openhanded God who gives to us all.
Serving the poor is serving Christ
Jesus taught that when we care for the hungry, the stranger, the sick, and the needy, we are ministering to Him personally. He so identifies with the least of these that kindness to them is kindness to Him.
"Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."Matthew 25:40
This lifts the smallest act of mercy to holy ground. A meal given, a coat shared, a hand extended, all of it is received by Christ Himself. There are no unimportant acts of kindness.
A common misunderstanding
Some think that helping the poor is a matter of good works that earns salvation, or that it is optional for busy believers. Salvation is by grace through faith alone, never by works. Yet true faith always shows itself in love and mercy toward others.
"But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?"1 John 3:17
We do not give to be saved. We give because we are saved. A heart changed by God's grace cannot stay closed to a brother in need. Mercy is the natural fruit of real faith.
