Strange experiences, ghost stories, and the paranormal stir up real questions and sometimes real fear. It is honest to ask what the Bible says. Scripture does not treat these things as harmless entertainment. It teaches that the dead do not wander as ghosts, warns against contacting spirits, and points us to Christ.
The short answer
The Bible teaches that when a person dies, the soul goes to await judgment, not to roam the earth as a ghost. It forbids seeking to contact the dead or spirits, and it warns of real evil spirits. The believer's safety is found in Jesus Christ.
The dead do not linger here
Scripture is clear that after death comes judgment, not a restless wandering among the living. The soul is not left to drift between two worlds.
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"Hebrews 9:27
The account of the rich man and Lazarus shows the dead in their appointed place, unable to cross back to the world of the living. There is no biblical picture of loved ones returning as ghosts.
"...between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot;"Luke 16:26
God forbids contacting spirits
The Bible strictly warns against trying to speak with the dead or with spirits, whether through mediums, seances, or other means. This is not superstition. It is a command meant to protect us.
"Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God."Leviticus 19:31
What some call paranormal activity, Scripture often traces to evil spirits that are real, deceptive, and opposed to God. These are not to be sought or toyed with.
Christ has authority over the unseen
The good news is that Jesus Christ holds complete authority over the spirit world. The believer does not face the darkness alone or unarmed.
"Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world."1 John 4:4
Where Christ is trusted and honored, fear of the unseen loses its grip. He is stronger than every power of darkness.
A common misunderstanding
Many assume a ghost is the spirit of a dead loved one trying to reach them. The Bible gives no support for that idea, and it warns that spiritual deception is real. What appears comforting can be a lie meant to draw a person away from God and into darkness. Scripture warns that even Satan disguises himself.
"And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light."2 Corinthians 11:14
Rather than reaching into the unseen, the Bible calls us to reach for Christ, who is light and truth.
