Many people read a horoscope without thinking much about it, and honestly wonder if it is harmless fun or something more. The Bible does not treat the question lightly. It warns against astrology and looking to the stars for guidance, and it calls us to trust the God who made those stars.
The short answer
The Bible condemns astrology, horoscopes, and every attempt to know the future through the stars or through divination. God alone knows and holds the future, and He calls His people to seek Him rather than the heavens He created.
God forbids divination and stargazing
Under the law, God plainly forbade every practice of trying to read the future through occult means. This included those who claimed to find answers in the movements of the sky.
"There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,"Deuteronomy 18:10
The prophet Isaiah spoke directly to those who trusted the astrologers and stargazers, and warned that such guides could not even save themselves.
"...Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee."Isaiah 47:13
The stars point to God, not away from Him
The Bible does honor the stars, but as the handiwork of God, not as a source of guidance. They are meant to lift our eyes to the Creator, not to replace Him as our counselor.
"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork."Psalm 19:1
To ask the stars what only God knows is to turn a good gift into an idol. It puts the creation in the place of the Creator.
Trust God for your future
Behind the appeal of a horoscope is a real longing to know what tomorrow holds. The Bible answers that longing, not with predictions, but with a Person we can trust. God knows the future perfectly and works it for the good of His people.
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding."Proverbs 3:5
We do not need a chart of the sky to face tomorrow. We have a Father who already holds it.
A common misunderstanding
Some think a horoscope is just entertainment and could not really hurt anyone. But the Bible treats the practice as a matter of trust and worship, not just amusement. To look to the stars for direction, even casually, is to look somewhere other than God. The danger is not that the stars have power, but that our hearts are drawn away from the One who does.
"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."Exodus 20:3
God is jealous for our full trust, because He alone is worthy of it and He alone can carry us.
