What Does the Bible Say About Abortion?

The Bible teaches that every human being is made in the image of God and known by Him before birth, so life is sacred from conception. It also offers full grace and forgiveness in Christ to anyone burdened by a past abortion. No one is beyond His mercy.

This is a tender subject, and we want to handle it with both honesty and compassion. The Bible speaks about the value of human life from its earliest moment, and it also speaks with tremendous grace to anyone carrying grief or guilt. Both of those truths matter deeply to God.

The short answer

Scripture presents unborn life as human life, known and formed by God. That is why we hold that life is sacred from conception. Yet the same Bible that upholds life also holds out complete forgiveness through Jesus Christ to anyone who has had an abortion. You are loved, and you are not beyond His mercy.

Life is God's handiwork from the start

The Bible describes God as personally forming each person in the womb. This is not distant machinery. It is the careful work of a Creator who knows us before anyone else does.

"For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well."Psalm 139:13-14

God told the prophet Jeremiah that his life and calling began before he was ever born, which tells us God sees the unborn as a person, not a possibility.

"Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations."Jeremiah 1:5

Every person bears God's image

The reason human life carries such weight is that people are made in the image of God. That dignity does not depend on size, ability, or stage of development.

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."Genesis 1:27

Because of that image, God cares for the weak and defenseless and calls His people to do the same.

"Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked."Psalm 82:4

Grace for anyone who has had an abortion

If you have had an abortion, please hear this clearly. God's arms are open to you. The gospel is not good news for people who have never failed. It is good news for people who have, which is all of us. There is no sin so deep that the blood of Christ cannot cleanse it.

"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool."Isaiah 1:18

The cross is the proof that God forgives fully and freely everyone who comes to Him through His Son.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."1 John 1:9

A common misunderstanding

Some assume the church wants to shame women who have had abortions, or that this sin is somehow unforgivable. Neither is true. The Bible never ranks people by their past. It calls every one of us sinners in need of a Saviour, and it promises that whoever comes to Christ will not be turned away. Conviction about the value of life and compassion for the hurting are not enemies. They belong together. If guilt has been following you, the answer is not to hide, but to bring it to the One who already knows and still loves you.
