What Does the Bible Say About Medication?

The Bible never forbids medicine, and it presents physical care and healing as part of God's provision. Taking medication, including for the mind and emotions, is not sinful or a lack of faith. God is the ultimate Healer, and He often works through the doctors, wisdom, and remedies He provides.

Many sincere believers wonder whether taking medication, especially for depression or anxiety, shows a weak faith. The Bible does not teach that. It presents medicine and healing as part of the good gifts God provides, while always pointing us to Him as the ultimate source of healing.

The short answer

The Bible does not forbid medicine, and taking it is not a sin or a sign of weak faith. Scripture treats physical remedies as part of God's care and even speaks of a physician's use. God is the ultimate Healer, but He often heals through the doctors, wisdom, and medicines He has provided. Prayer and medical care are not enemies.

God is the source of healing

Above every remedy, Scripture points us to God Himself as the One who heals.

"Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases."Psalm 103:2-3

Whatever means He uses, healing ultimately comes from His hand. We look through the medicine to the God who made our bodies and can restore them.

Medicine appears in Scripture

The Bible speaks of physical remedies without condemning them. Paul urged Timothy to use a common remedy for his stomach.

"Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities."1 Timothy 5:23

Even the prophet Isaiah applied a physical remedy to King Hezekiah's illness, and God's healing came through it. Scripture also pictures medicine as bringing relief.

"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones."Proverbs 17:22

Wisdom seeks good counsel

God commends the seeking of wise counsel, which includes the counsel of those trained to help our bodies and minds.

"Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety."Proverbs 11:14

Consulting a doctor and following sound medical advice is an exercise of the wisdom God tells us to seek, not a failure to trust Him.

Pray and trust while you take medicine

Medicine and prayer belong together, not in competition. We take the help God provides while trusting Him with the outcome.

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."Proverbs 3:5-6

Bring your health, your medicines, and your fears to God in prayer, and trust Him to guide your steps and your care.

A common misunderstanding

Some believe that a truly faithful Christian would refuse medication and simply pray, and that taking pills, especially for the mind, shows unbelief. Scripture does not support this. Paul prescribed a remedy to Timothy, Isaiah used one for Hezekiah, and Proverbs speaks of medicine doing good. Refusing wise medical help is not greater faith; it can be presumption. God is fully able to heal directly, and He also chooses to heal through doctors and medicine. Both are His to use, and trusting Him means receiving His help gratefully.
