Marijuana is legal in some places and debated in many homes. The Bible does not mention the plant by name, but it speaks clearly about intoxication, self-control, and a mind kept ready for the Lord. Those principles settle the question.
The short answer
Scripture calls believers to be sober-minded and self-controlled, not altered or intoxicated. Using marijuana to get high dulls the very clarity God tells us to guard. Add that recreational use often breaks the law, and the Bible commands obedience to lawful authority. Recreational marijuana use does not honor God.
God calls us to be sober and vigilant
Over and over the New Testament tells believers to keep a clear, watchful mind. Sobriety is not just about alcohol; it describes an alert, self-governed heart.
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour."1 Peter 5:8
A mind clouded by a high is a mind off guard. God wants His children alert, thinking clearly, and ready to resist temptation, not chasing an escape that leaves them defenseless.
Self-control is fruit of the Spirit
The Spirit of God produces self-control in the believer, the opposite of being controlled by a substance.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."Galatians 5:22-23
Temperance means self-control. Deliberately giving up your clear thinking to a drug works against what the Holy Spirit is trying to grow in you. God does not want us mastered by anything but Him.
Obey the governing authorities
Where recreational use is against the law, Scripture is direct: believers submit to lawful authority as unto God.
"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God."Romans 13:1
Breaking the law for a high is a poor witness and a direct disobedience to what God commands. A Christian should not need the law to change before deciding to obey God.
Set your mind on higher things
God asks for our minds, renewed and set on Him, not numbed or escaping.
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."Romans 12:2
Your body is also God's temple, bought at a price.
"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?"1 Corinthians 6:19
A common misunderstanding
Some argue that God made the plant, so using it must be fine, and point to Genesis where God gave the green herb. But God giving plants for food and use does not bless every use of every plant. Poisonous and mind-altering plants exist too. The question is not whether God made it but whether getting high honors Him, keeps you sober, and obeys the law. Medical use under a doctor's care for genuine illness is a different matter than seeking a recreational high.
