What Does the Bible Say About Dinosaurs?

The Bible teaches that God made every living creature, including the great beasts of the land. Dinosaurs were animals, and Scripture says God created the land animals on the sixth day. Passages describing behemoth and leviathan show God made powerful creatures we no longer see today.

People often ask where dinosaurs fit in the Bible, since they are not named by that modern word. It is a fair question. The Bible does not use the term dinosaur, but it does teach clearly that God made every creature, including the great and powerful beasts of the land.

The short answer

Dinosaurs were animals, and the Bible says God created all the land animals. There is no conflict. Scripture describes God making the beasts of the earth, and even pictures huge, powerful creatures in the books of Job and Psalms.

God made every creature

On the sixth day of creation, God made the land animals. Dinosaurs, as land creatures, belong to that same act of creation. Nothing that lives was made apart from Him.

"And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good."Genesis 1:25

The Scripture is sweeping in its claim. Everything that was made came from the hand of God, on the land, in the sea, and in the air.

"All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."John 1:3

Behemoth and leviathan

In the book of Job, God points to two remarkable creatures to display His power. Behemoth is described as a massive land animal of great strength, and leviathan as a fearsome creature no man could tame.

"Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox."Job 40:15
"Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?"Job 41:1

Whatever we call these creatures now, the Bible presents them as real animals God made and controls. They remind us that the world once held beasts far greater than most we know today.

Why the great beasts matter

God uses these creatures not to satisfy our curiosity, but to humble our pride. If we cannot tame such an animal, how much greater is the God who made it? The point is worship, not merely wonder.

"O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches."Psalm 104:24

We hold to a young creation gently and gladly, believing man and the great beasts were both made by God. We do not mock those who see it differently. We simply point back to the Scriptures.

A common misunderstanding

Some assume the Bible must be wrong because it does not mention dinosaurs by name. But the Bible never claimed to catalog every animal by our modern labels. It teaches the bigger truth, that God made all creatures great and small. The absence of a modern word is not the absence of the animal, and it is not a contradiction.

"For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible..."Colossians 1:16

The dinosaur, like every creature, testifies that a mighty God made this world.
